The Nature of Color

Explore the science of color with this vivid exhibit, The Nature of Color. Learn how color conveys information and helps us make sense of the world in both human and natural environments. Use hands-on interactives to analyze how colors make us feel, how they are perceived across cultures, as well as how plants and animals use color to help them survive and reproduce.
Featured artwork includes an installation of portraits by Brazilian photographer Angélica Dass, whose work highlights the diversity of human skin tones to challenge socially constructed racial categories and celebrate the beauty and diversity of humans from around the world. This exhibition also features a never before seen transparent red chiffon and organza gown created specially for this exhibit by American fashion designer, Brandon Maxwell.

Exhibit Highlights
- Step into a color-changing room featuring a light lab to experiment with combining and separating colors to make white light.
- Make your own art! “Paint” on a floor-to-ceiling color play interactive by just moving your hands, and arrange mirrors and filters to create light art.
- Explore the different feelings colors can evoke by arranging colored tiles to create pleasing or clashing combinations and then share your personal reaction to colors on a big screen.
- Discover how colors can create shared identity by examining the many uses of red throughout human history.
- Learn about the rich history of blue with an interactive that demonstrates the process of dying indigo fabric.
